The world’s largest food company is diving into the alternative seafood game with the launch of its plant-based tuna, Vuna, under its Garden Gourmet brand. The Garden Gourmet brand includes several plant-based meat products, but Vuna is their first foray into plant-based seafood.
“Sustainably produced plant-based seafood alternatives can help to reduce overfishing and protect the biodiversity of our oceans,” said Nestlé’s chief technology officer Stefan Palzer. “Our plant-based tuna alternative is delicious, nutritious and high in protein.”
Based on pea protein, Vuna contains just five other ingredients and has a flaky texture and flavour intended to match conventional tuna. Vuna will first launch on Swiss supermarket shelves, with Nestlé planning for other plant-based fish alternatives to follow.
